Chelsea! Chelsea

The day started quite late for me. At 1:15pm I started to walk to Russel Square Tube station, the meeting place. First time there. It was actually nearer than King's Cross. I might choose to go there the next time I'm in need of the tube service.

The first to arrive. Z came 10 minutes later. Then SM and Mak. Wanna know the funny story? This was supposed to be a 'school' trip but out of the 10 tickets offered, only two took up the offer and those two were us girls! In all we have 11 people from IC, LSE, Nottingham U and Cambridge. 8 guys and 3 girls. 9 Chinese and 2 Malays.

Bought the day travelcard for Zone 1 and 2 because Stamford Bridge Stadium is at Fulham Road which is in Zone 2. Took the Piccadilly Line to Earl's Court and change to District Line. We took the wrong District Line train at Earl's Court and had to u-turn. The train were packed with Chelsea's fans with their blue jerseys.

Went out at Fulham Broadway. Didn't have to wonder around looking for directions to the stadium, just followed the other thousands people. Waited for the rest of guys outside the tube station. There were police patrols on horses. Scalpers offering tickets. One of them even came up to us and wanted to have a look at our tickets. Wanted to know how much we paid for the tickets and make his estimations for the price he wanted to offer.

Me and Z bought Official Matchday Magazine for 」3.00. It has Emmenuel Petit on its cover. Still haven't looked at the program. Maybe before going to sleep after this, I'll flip through.

Our seat was at Gate 7 of West Stand Upper Tier. Actually quite a good seat. It has to be good because we paid 」37.50 for that seat. (Idlan paid 」24 for an MU game.. jeles jeles!) Before entering the security guy wanted to have a peak into my bag pack. I had my umbrella, water bottle and biscuits (for buka puasa) and my organizer in there plus the Matchday magazine. Wasn't expecting anything when suddenly the guy took my water bottle, took off the cap and threw the cap into the bin right infront of my eyes. What the heck? He looked at my bewildered face and said something about the policy of not bringing in capped water botel. "You have to hold it" So, there I was holding a bottle full of water to the rim. I saw that other people also had water bottle without the cap. But it's okay for them because they're drinking them right away but for me, I had to hold it for another 1 1/2 hour until buka puasa time. So, can anyone tell me what's the reason and logic behind this policy? I can only think of the capped water bottle has more force when being thrown on the pitch by rowdy fans. Please someone enlighten me. Idlan?

Let me tell you that I have never been to a live football match in my whole life. In fact the only sporting events I've been to were NHL hockey games when I was in the states. Kat Malaysia langsung tak pernah-pernah pergi. Oh wait, I did watched athletics at the Commanwealth Games 98 in Malaysia. Does that count?

The first sound I hear was that familiar song. Chelsea Chelsea! You know, the one that was used for a Dunhill(?) EPL commercial on TV in Malaysia. I really like that song and heard it the full length. It was really a sight to get into a full stadium. We were seated among Chelsea fans. But they were kinda quiet compared to those at the north end stand.

The game started on time, sharp at 3 pm. Before that, when the two teams came out from the tunnel, there were thunderous and rousing applause from the fans while standing. They were very a educated bunch, clapping at the good play, attacking and defensively. First they intoduced Middlesbrough players, didn't recognize any of them. Then the Chelsea players. Saving Gianfranco Zola for the last with the announcer saying "and as always, the most thunderous welcome from Chelsea fans for no. 25, Gianfranco Zola". Even me the non-Chelsea fan clapped also because Zola is Italian and I love my Azzurri!

The half time was spent with us going further down and bergambar click sana dan click sini. Then they introduced one Chelsea legend. Oh, during the game they even showed on the big screen a shot of Goran Erikson, the England manager, sitting on the stand. He was a Chelsea manager before taking the England job. (I'm pretty sure it was him or someone important and famous worthy to have his face shown on the big screen)

It was really something to actually be in the middle of that atmosphere. I always wonder what those fans were always saying and singing. Those harmonius(?) humming and singing. Well I got a few. One was simply Chelsea belted out with 4 different tones. Another one was Come on Chelse. There were couple more that I couldn't quite catch what the words were.

Quote:

Flying high up in the sky,
We'll keep the blue flag flying high,
From Stamford Bridge to Wemb(er)ley,
We'll keep the blue flag flying high.

We will follow the Chelsea, over land and sea - And Leicester!
We will follow the Chelsea onnnn-tooo vi-ic-toreee,
altogether now.....

Carefree, wherever we may be,
We are the famous CFC,
And we don't give a ****,
Whoever you may be,
Cos we are the famous CFC

One man went to mow, went to mow a meadow,
One man and his dog spot, went to mow a meadow,
Two men went to mow.....

The game ended with a 1-0 score. 5th win in 6 games for Chelsea. They are still standing 3rd in the league table. Hmmph.. dah jadi penyokong Chelsea ke aku ni? hehe. Like I mentioned before, I am not big on English football. If I have to pick a team, it would be Liverpool. I noticed them since Ian Rush days. Was never a Man U fan.

It was a great game, a successful outing for me. A very nice experience. Would love to watch another game but maybe with a cheaper ticket. Even Arsenal tickets sell for less for about 」25 but of course the waiting list is at 25,000. Chelsea tickets are expensive because that area is kinda posh.

We saw this one Malay guy at the exit. being one of the guard and getting paid 」40 for one match. Nice part-time job but the down-side is you get to see the fans and not the game
