Cuti2 Seoul - Nandaemun Market ~ Shop till you drop!!

View all 5 photos...
5th day

We saved the best for last. On Wednesday, we went out very early in the morning. Had the usual breakfast at Subway and off to Nandaemun Market. If it's made, you can find it in Namdaemun. This market has everything including clothing, glasses, bags, shoes, accessories, ceramic ware, glassware, food, camping and climbing equipment. Haggling is encouraged as price tags are usually not used. Namdaemun is so big that probably one day will not be enough. But fortunately(?) for us, we are out of won and most shops don't accept credit cards.

First, we went looking for the brooch. Found several shops, arcade-like. Went it, tengok-tengok, belek-belek, grab sana sikit sini sikit. The price ranges starts 1,500 won to berpuluh-puluh ribu won. I shouldn have bought more but there are other stuff to buy.

Asalkan berjalan sikit, masuk kedai, sure came out with some stuff. Memang rambang mata, rambang segala-galanya. I got my haversack. Dapat tawar harga from 40,000 to 22,000 won. We went crazy at one jeans shop. It sells jeans with motifs on, beaded, printed etc and its artworks were sold at Takashimaya! Haiya.. mana boleh lepaskan peluang. We came out with 3 jeans and 1 denim jacket and 180,000 won poorer. Itupun I managed to haggled for 20,000 won less. (The owner complimented on my skill, hehe) It was DD's credit card to the rescue.

Then, we were looking for some souveniors. Bought also kimchi seaweed. It tasted quite good. Buy then, I'm totally out of won and had to borrow money from the girls.

Our last night in Seoul and we have had the chance still to sample Korean food. I asked the help from someone at the guesthouse (Not sure who is the worker who is the guests). Told him our criteria and he took us to the nice small restaurant opposite the guesthouse.

This is what we ate. I have no idea what the name is. But it was a mid hot soup with tofu, egg and clams in them and rice. That's the main dish. The rest are freebies. I think it is like ulam and sambal belacan (but we don't get it free in malaysia kan). There's kimchi, a salted, pickled vegetable dish, its best known food (at the top left corner). Next to it is a dish that tasted like fishcake. Then bottom two are either pickled onion or cucumber (couldn't figure out what is was) and seaweed. And a huge salads serving.

Koreans eat rice with fork and spoon. The way I saw people at the other table eat, you put everything into the rice and mix them well, then you eat. Kitorang buat stail makan melayu, ambil lauk sikit-sikit. We ate the rice with the chopstix. (Terover Jepun lak we all! hehe) The food costs 3,500 won each. It advertised as hot tapi bila orang Melayu yang rasa, tak pedas langsung.

Esoknya kami pun pulang.....

Quote:
Breakfast Subway = 3,700 won
Taxi = 1,900 won
Haversack = 22,000 won
Brooch = 21,500 won
Jacket denim = 50,000 won
Omiyage = 18,000 won
Kimchi Nori = 6,000 won
Dinner korean food = 3,500 won
Bus to Incheon Airport = 8,000 won

---------------

That was most of our trip to Seoul. 6 days 5 nights. The longest I've spent at one place while travelling (not counting the 2 weeks in Japan last year because that was holiday while visiting relatives). Usually 3 days is the max. I was a poor student on a shoestring budget, in the US and UK.

I spent 26,000 yen for the flight ticket. And I finished all but 300 won that I brought to Seoul. That was 50,000 yen. And I still had to borrow another 10,000 yen from DD. Almost 9man. ihiks.

It was a nice trip. Seoul surprised me and I think I'm going to see it one more time. I still haven't visit DMZ and I need to shop shop some more

Cuti-cuti Seoul - silk hunting & river cruise

View all 6 photos...
4th day

Up to the 3rd day, everything went according to plan. We were supposed to go on a tour to the Demiliterized Zone, border between North and South Korea, which is a cease-fire line between Capitalist and Communist, good and evil. However, the others are not interested and don't want to part their money which could buy them 4 metres of Korean silk. I didn't mind going alone but after contemplating the whole night before I decided not to go. I might visit Korea again, then I'll get my chance with others who has the same interest with I am.

So, we have an extra day off. The others decided to just sleep in till noon. I went out early alone, go visit some palaces, try to catch the Palace Guards. Took a taxi ride which is so damn cheap. The metre didn't even change stayed at 900 won which is 100 yen. In Tokyo, fares starts at Y660.

What's left to do in Seoul is shopping. First shopping agenda is to find the store which sells silk kain ela. Zafie was here before, she gave us the address. This shop is where all Malaysians in Korean shop for silk, the embassy promotes it. He exports his silk to Malaysia. The place is near our guesthouse, Kwangjang Market. We called the shop, the owner can speak English and a little Malay. Just say you're Malaysian and they would be willing to pick you up from the hotel. We took the taxi and she waited at the entrance of the market.

Kwangjang Market speacializes in silk fabrics and clothes. A large number of shops there run small factories of their own to manufacture fabric. The place feels like Geylang in the old days or Pasar Bukit Tinggi in Sumatera. Shoplots with some not bigger than a closet.

Dah masuk kedai, maka membeli-belahlah kami. The others bought a lot. Untuk Mak, nenek, adik, kakak ipar, kawan etc etc. I only bought two. My family dah malas nak pakai silk. Each costs 50,000 won for 4 metres, a special price for Malaysians. Korean sells kain ela by yard. But since this shop caters for Malaysians, they cut it by metres. I think we came out with 12 pasang kain ela.

Quote:
The name is Hyun Woo Silk. The address is #187, 188 1F Kwang Jang Textile Department, 6-1 Yejidong Jongroku, Seoul. Phone: 2269-0169, 2276-0169. Hp: 011-276-0169. Getting off the Tongdaemun Station on Subway Line 4,Chongno 5-ga Station on Subway Line 1 or Tongdaemun Station on Subway Line 2. atau naik aje taxi.

Dah habis borong kedai dia, I asked the lovely girl to accompany me outside. I want to buy other kain ela, non-silk. I asked her to tawar for me. I bought another 4 outside. All of them 5 yards. (Banyaklah Mak nanti dapat kain perca lebih nak buat selimut) Winter is coming, so corak kain pun suram2 sikit. I'm 200,000 won poorer by the end of our short trip to Kwangjang Market.

All the three of us is short in won. Belum pergi Nandaemun Market lagi nih!! Can't withdraw money because Japanese bank ATM card has no Cirrus ke hapa ke yang boleh withdraw money overseas. Korek-korek all the yen we still have and tukar duit at the bank.

Sent our barang borongan back to the guesthouse and went out again. This time to the Han Riverside Park. Han River seperates Seoul into halves. A nice clean river with parks on both sides. I love it. There were people on a picnic, rollerblading, strolling enjoying the view.

We took the Hangang River cruise at Yanghwa. A round trip to Yeoido. The price was 7,200 won after 20% discount with our Seoul City Tour Bus discount. We started at sundown. A one hour journey with a view of Seoul skyline at night.

Quote:
Lunch subway = 3,500 won
Teksi = 1,700 won
Korean silk (2 helai) = 100,000 won
Kain ela biasa (4 helai) = 50,000 won
River cruise = 7,200 won

akak akan ke seoul untuk attend conference di sana pada bulan oktober nanti. akak banyak tanya orang kat mana nak pegi beli silk korea di sana and masa surfing the web terjumpa your blog and akak am very grateful yang you cerita kat mana nak beli kain silk. i will definitely check out the store and ada kedai lain yang you recommend tak? Cuti-cuti Seoul - Lotte World

View all 21 photos...
3rd day

Hari ke-3 diperuntukkan untuk dihabiskan sehari suntuk di Lotte World. It is a gigantic, multi-purpose complex features shopping malls, sports facilities (ice rink in the middle), a theme park, a deluxe hotel and a folk village. It boasts the largest indoor theme park in the world and that was all we thought we were going to get.

We were there sharp at 9:30am, the first few I think. There were no long lines unlike Disneyland. Got a 5,000 won discount from the Seoul City Tour City bus ticket. We paid only 25,000 won for a speciall pass admission. We were greeted specially by the brass band and the cartoon characters. Sah-sah orang pertama yang sampai.

The place is huge!! I wasn't expecting much after the dissappointment of Yokohoma Sea Paradise and Tokyo Disneysea. But this one beats all of that. Even Six Flags thrilling roller coasters or Disney cute rides.

Besides, Lotte World Adventure, the indoor theme park. There were Magic Island, the lake park. Wow, lagi best. There wasn't much queue on each rides. We took our own sweet time. Sempat naik monorail, sempat mengayuh boat sampai nak tanggal lutut. Sempat lunch at a nice restaurant, Edinburgh restaurant.

The most scary thing was the Gyro Swing. I didn't know what I was getting into. Tak sempat nak tengok before embarking. Masya-allah. People know that I was never scared of any rides. Terjun ke, lompat ke, roller coaster ke but this one.. aiyo. I screamed my heart out, air mata, air hidung, air mulut semua keluar!! We were dropping from 70m height with twisting at 100km per hour. Atas laut lagi!! And everytime dia berpusing terasa macam nak terlanggar the bukit tiruan for the next door roller coaster ride. Taubat itulah sekali I'll ever go on that thing.

Another ride that I'll never get on is the Comet Express. Exploring space by a spinning chair in a train. Nothing right?? I was alone, big mistake. My chair wouldn't stop spinning, even after the ride stops. Muahaha.. all the Koreans who were in queue waiting for their turn was looking at this crazy tudung clad lady who was still terhoyong-hayang bila dah keluar dari ride. I felt like vomitting there and then. My girlfriends couldn't stop laughing at me. Ye lah, cuba next time korang pulak naik sorang2!

The attractions were unique. variety. Verticle, romantic rides, spinning, getting wet, twisting, on air, under the sea, macam-macam ada. Roller coaster pun real punya, yang mencabar jantung! hehehe. Paling kelakar when we went into the Haunted House, tak jadi seram because we couldn't understand Korean. Hantu dia tak bilingual! hehe.

Lastly we entered the Folk Museum. Ini pun best. I love history and I was enjoying the museum. The museum showed a vivid pictures of the people's daily life and was reproduced in a 1/8-scale miniature model. We were the last people there and the worker was waiting for us to finish so that they can close the museum.

Lotte World memang World! It had everything. Recommended. Plus it is cheap to get in. We went home at 8pm. The guys didn't want to wait for the laser show. Kaki sakit tak hingat. Balik berjalan slow-slow.

Quote:
Lotte World ticket = 25,000 won
Churos = 2,000 won
Cekak bunny = 3,000 won
Lunch Edinburgh = 7,000 won
Dinner Burger King = 4,100 won

Cuti-cuti Seoul - Itaewon

View all 5 photos...
Our last stop on the Seoul City Tour Bus was Itaewon, a designated Special Tourist Zone. It is one of the most popular shopping and dining areas for foreign tourists. Half of the faces we've seen there were in fact foreigners, mostly blacks. Met a few Malaysians. We were there to find our dinner.

This is what I like about Seoul. Halal food is abundant. A lot you can find in Itaewon. Pusing kiri, belok kanan, pandang atas, halal restaurants are everywhere and they advertised halal sign on their marquee. Senang baitu!

First stop tho is the Seoul Central Masjid. There were signboards, tak susah nak cari. Cuma kena mendaki bukit. The mosque is exactly at the top of the hill. So, add this to Paris Mosque and Vienna Mosque. I've yet to go to Tokyo Mosque. I don't remember but I think I didn't go to Regent's Mosque in London because we had our solat in Malaysia Hall. Masjid Negara pun saya tak pergi lagi. uwaaaa.. hisssh. Along the way jumpa lagi banyak kedai runcit halal. They say most Malaysians live here. We even found a small kebab store that advertised "Makan sedap di sini". Mesti ramai Melayu yang makan kat situ. Did our jamaq and went back down the hill.

Singgah dulu kedai kebab. Teringin sangat nak makan kebab. Dah letih dengan all the Indian food I had in Tokyo. We tapaued some. Back to the main road. Was looking for Usmania Restaurant which advertised itself as serving international cuisine. Found it opposite the Hamilton Hotel. Not too bad looking. Mesti murah macam makanan2 lain kat Seoul.

Bila masuk restaurant, alamak classy giler. Bila dah diadvertised dalam most tourists booklets, mestilah standard punyakan. It was buffet dinner. Paid 18,600 won for it. Ouch! Rupanya we went thru the side entrance. Front entrance cun giler. Dah masuk, dah duduk, makan saja. The spread was typical Indian cuisine. International.. yeah right. But I love its vegetable samosa. Delicious bangat.

4th day we went back to Itaewon again. Dinner lagi. This time, a different restaurant, another that was advertised on Seoul's Best 100 booklet. The name is Taj Mahal. Jumpa dua lelaki Melayu di situ. Ditegur and we said we were terroriststourists. He thought we were students in Seoul. Had Beryani Ayam. Sedaaaaaapnya. 10,000 won. Mahalnya.

Besides international restaurants - Italian, Swiss, German, Mexican, Thai, Indonesian (Malaysia gak takde!) you'll find shops selling leather goods, bags, clothes, shoes and souveniors. The sidewalk is fringed with stalls selling accessories, hats, T-shirts, small gadgets and much more.

I didn't get anything here but I did showed my skill of tawar-menawar (Makcik Normah would be proud of me, cik talamubi Getting 30,000 for a carry-on luggage bag for DD. The starting price was 50,000 won.

Next time when I'm in Seoul, I might be tempted to find a hotel in Itaewon, makan senang. But the many foreigners there, agak menakutkan juga.

Quote:
Kebab = 3,000 won
Buffet Usmawi = 18,400 won
Beryani dinner Taj Mahal = 10,000 won

Salaam.. kak.. mcam best jer.. sya tak penah pi sana tp nk pi sana one day..kkkk
oh yea.. kat seoul ada tak akk jmp restaurant korea (korean owned) yg halal? kat dlm KTO kata ada restoran yg halal certified... tp punye la cari kat internet tak jmp pun.. tolong bls ASAP ek... tq kak... jeles la akk dpt pi.. saya pun nak p gak la one day..ahakss,...!!

Cuti2 Seoul - Seoul City Tour

Seoul Tower
Seoul City Tour

View all 19 photos...
2nd day

Lepas subuh, terus bersiap-siap, keluar awal. Hajat untuk round Seoul. Perut kena isi dulu. Banyak kedai makan kat sini, murah harga. Kedai tepi jalan, makan tepi jalan. Isssh sebijik cam Malaysialah. Paling femes, jual apa yang nampak seperti yong tow foo. Tak boleh makan, tengok aje ler.

Ada banyak fast food restaurants lak tu. Kalau kat Jepun, setakat ada McD & KFC. Kat hujung jalan sini, ada Burger King & Subway sebelah menyebelah. Dah lama sungguh tak makan Subway. Yum yum yum. Setakat bayar 4,000 won. Alahai, takkan dapat punya rega murah camtu kat Tokyo.

Cari subway, the underground train. Ours was Hyehwa Station. We bought a T-money, a pre-paid ticket that can be used for all the public transport in Seoul including taxis. We paid 12,500 won (2,500 is the price of the card) and got discount 100 won for every ride. Plus it gives transfer discount between the public transport if you transfer within 30 minutes. When departing Seoul we can get a refund for any remaining amount on the card. Sangatlah convenient. Kenapalah Tokyo or KL tidak macam ni? In fact London pun takde. US cities ada.

Seoul's subway maju juga, banyak line. Bila dah banyak line, maka banyaklah kena tukar-tukar line. Adus, ini satu nak kena complain dekat Seoul Transport Authority. I guess masa depa buat all these lines, mesti tak bersambung-sambung takde coordination macam Putra & Star in KL. We don't have to go out on the streets but he have to walk... jauuuuuuuuuhnya to get to the connecting lines. London tak macamni, Paris tak macamni, Rome tak macamni, Tokyo tak macamni, but Seoul yes. Dah la kena tukar 2 kali pulak tu. Dahlah kena turun naik pulak tu. Dah lah Seoul tak suka pakai escalator lak tu. Lemah lutut!

Found the Seoul Tour City Bus at its first stop, Gwanghwamun Gate. One thing is great about Seoul is that it is a tourist-friendly city. You have the transport card, the tour bus, and it is cheap! The tour bus costs 10,000 won per day. Ada 2 route - palace route & downtown route. Turun naik lah sebanyak mana yang kita hendak. It gives discounts to other Seoul attractions which we took advantage of. But to compare with London or Paris city tour with its open-topped bus, Seoul is a normal bus.

Maka turun naiklah kami melalui semua tourists attractions di Seoul. 27 stops in all. I think we only stopped at 9 of those. The bus runs every 1/2 hour. What we did was turun, posing-posing for 1/2 hour and the hop back in again.

Some of our stops.

Quote:
Seoul City Hall
War Memorial Korea
Seoul Train Station. Banyak jumpa abang-abang GI dari US kat sini. Hari outing depa kot. Lagipun this is near the US Army Base.

Namsangol Traditional Korean Village. They staged a traditional Korean wedding. Sapa perasan ada ayam jantan kat atas tu. Wajib dalam perkahwinan Korea. Ada budak2 main jongkang-jongket. Ada orang lelaki dok pukul2 adunan tepung.

One of the many palaces in Seoul. Deoksugong Palace. Changgyeonggung Palace & Changdeokgung Palace.

Seoul Tower. It is located at the top of Namsan Park, right in the middle of Seoul. Macam Bukit Nanas kat KL kot. Namsan is a very nice park. Nice gateway. Banyak orang berjogging, naik basikal. Tua muda miskin dan kaya menyambutnya dengan gembira. Ada cable car to the Tower. Unfortunately the observation deck was closed for renovation.

Other places on the tour -
Quote:
Namdaemun Market (a whole new entry),
Yongsan Station,
Itaewon (another whole new entry),
Myeongdong - Pedestrian-friendly area loaded with department stores, shopping malls ala Bukit Bintang. They say Korean fashion starts here.
Insadong - home to art theaters, galleries, antiques, handicraft shops. Not our cup of tea.
Daehangno - where we stayed. fun and exciting. gardens, theaters, concert halls, trendy bars, stylish cafes, amateur singers, sketch artists, you name it.
Dongdaemun Market - malls, malls, malls again. A huge flea market outside the stadium. Jalan jem tak hingat!
CheongWaDae - rumah Presiden Korea.
National Folk Museum, National Theather, Performing Arts.

Casual observations.

    Banyak polis dan askar bersepah-sepah. Polis buat road block. Road block cantik pulak tu, letak penghalang diisi dengan bunga-bungaan. Askar berjalan-jalan.

    Seoul agak kotor. Buang sampah makanan di tepi jalan (ikat elok2 but still, loya gak tengok) depan kedai untuk dikutip.

    Macam KL jugak, suka korek jalan sana korek sini waktu peak hours, jalan jadi jem. Cuba contohi orang Jepun, nak korek jalan buat malam-malam buta, time takde kereta.

    Pemandu dia. Masya-allah, KL drivers pun jadi nampak sopan santun. I've never seen so many dented and scratched cars in my whole life. Brand new looking cars, some more and if you see how Korean drivers drive their vehicles, you know why. They honk sesuka hati. Bila bercium, tang tang tu, tengah2 jalan raya bercakaran oblivious to the cars behind. Scary!

In all, Korea lebih mirip dengan Malaysia dari Jepun. Kita boleh agak kemajuan sesebuah negara berdasarkan cara hidup rakyatnya. And Seoul is no where near Tokyo but a bit higher that KL.

Another thing, I was really surprise, pleasantly surprised. Ingatkan Seoul takde apa-apa because I don't know much of Korea. Bila sebut Korea, all I can think of are Samsung, Hyundai, Korean brooch and Korean Silk. Was never a fan of any of Korean dramas, so tak excited apa-apa pun. But the seoul city tour bus showed that Seoul has a lot to offer. Wait for my next installment of jalan-jalan seoul.

Cuti2 Seoul - the beginning

View all 6 photos...
I packed apa-apa yang patut. 6 days 5 nights worth of clothes. Totalled 9kg. Ahaks. Aku sumbat batu belah batu bertangkup apa dalam tu. Singgah dulu Ten-ya for lunch. Terserempak dengan Ikeda sensei dalam densha (keretapi). Pecah rahsia nak jalan kankoku (south korea).

Naik densha seterusnya. Mahalnya tiket densha, 3090yen. Satu jam lebih sikit, sempat tertidur.

Checked-in at United Airlines. The flight was full. The attendants were nice. 2 hours journey, takde movie. Baca Wall Street Journal, tidur.

Sampai Incheon International Airport pukul 9 malam. Took the limousine bus as instructed by the guesthouse's website. Nowadays, all the airports of the worlds are far away from the city centre. Incheon to downtown Seoul is 1.5 hours by bus. First impression on the highway of Seoul? It looked very much like KL. The greenery, the buildings, the fast cars. Except for one thing, they drive on the left here and they drive mostly Hyundais.

Not too hard to find the guesthouse. Right smack in the middle of a university town. The Sungkyunkwan university. The town was lively. Rasa macam kat pasar malam Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. Again, first impression, not as clean as Tokyo.

Met the owner, paid the rent, got in the room. Hmmm.. kelakarlah. Not too bad but not that great either. A bit too small for a triple room. Rabi'ah is good at finding nice hostels except for the one yang atas gunung kat Salzburg tu (nice room tapi tak larat nak mendaki). Kalau me, the worst was the hostel I booked in Paris, sebijik macam belakang Lorong Haji Taib buat my Mom asyiklah berselawat when we were in the room. hehe. Windroad Guesthouse in Seoul was okay, comfortable, affordable. Bayar murah (15,000 won per night per person) lagi mahu bising.

Met the owner who can speaks English. The mom who only speaks Korean. Two friendly Japanese people whom I thought at first were working at the guesthouse.

End of first night

Quote:
Flight United Airlines = 26,500 yen
Tokyo-Narita express = 3090yen
Incheon Airport - Seoul (hostel) express bus = 8000won
Hostel private room (5days) = 75,000won

Sea Paradise, Yokohama

View all 15 photos...
Seperti underwater world with roller-coaster.

Nak pergi theme park tapi pukul 12 kami masih lagi di Shinjuku. Sempat brunch sementara menunggu Kayzee & Zubair sampai. Yokohama tidak jauh dari Tokyo. Kami menaiki keretapi Japan Rail (JR). Entah kenapa hari itu, banyak kali pulak kami bertukar keretapi. Boring betul. Yokohama bandar pelabuhan di selatan Tokyo.

The ride bolehlah tahan. A big roller-coaster. Ada kapal yang macam kat The Mall tu. Ada juga Blue Fall, a free fall from 107 meters yang cik kieli naik sorang2. Yang lagi 5 orang tu semua takut. I screamed my heart out especially during the initial fall. Dalam banyak-banyak tu, yang paling cik kieli beriya-iya jerit was a dolphin coaster. Kecik dan pendek saja ride dia tapi sebab dia membuatkan kita terasa macam nak tercampak, tu yang terover menjerit. Dah lah orang-orang Jepun ni sopan santun, tak reti menjerit. Maka menjadi tumpuanlah kami.

Di Aqua Museum, yang paling best is the undersea tunnel. Naik escalator dikelilingi oleh ikan2. We watched the animal show.

The best part was when we were killing time waiting for the park to close. Naik Surf Coaster, a 1,271m long coaster that takes us up in the sky and out over the sea, 3 kali berturut-turut. Dah takde orang. Kitorang keluar, dan naik balik. We wanted to make sure that our pictures taken by the coaster camera would be perfect. Tapi sayangnya, tiga2 kali ada aje slacknya. Kepala pun dah pening-pening and I stopped screaming because it doesnt scare me anymore. heheh.

The admission price is a bit steep. We paid 4,900 yen for a one-day pass. Rasa macam tak berbaloi. Even masuk Universal Studio or Disneyland pun 5,500 aje.
